The lighthouse on Sullivan's Island, SC stands 140 feet tall and marks the entrance to Charleston harbor.  This formidable beach invader, by reckoning, must stand close to 700 feet.  I was sure to keep my distance.

Palmetto trees back lit by a fanciful sunset sky in Charleston, SC.  This is an example of lighting your subject, or rather back lighting it.  The trees silhouette into a crisp clean row of stately symbolism carrying power and impact to the viewer.

This is an example of shallow Depth of Field (DOF) and different focal points.  You can see here how small amounts can change you photograph in different ways.  In this case from a soft delicate image to a crisp detailed image.  Not there there is a right or wrong here.  This is more creative taste and pursuit of what you are looking for.  How do you see the image and what do you want to capture.  With autofocus you can get creative by "tricking" the focus sensor.  Simply point at what you wish to focus on.  Press the trigger down half way until if "goes green" with a proper focus. Now keeping the trigger button half depressed...  re-frame your shot.  This way you can achieve the composition you really want AND get the focal point you want.  Give it a try.

I've showcased painting filters and brushed images here in the past.  In this one though I took a more realistic approach.  This is real water color.  These yellow blossoms are reflected atop the slow moving stream.  The big green background of trees is blended softly with an afternoon sky.  The soft ebb flow in this stream offers the organic impressionistic reflections.  Look beyond what is right in front of you.

This is a shot from just above ground line of the Old Main Line tunnel which is the second shortest on the rail at 240ft.  In the foreground is Bridge 27A.  The tunnel was built in 1902-03.

GEEKSQ tells me the laptop is fixed again with a new motherboard and is in the mail.  hopefully within a few days I'm back up adn running again.  :)

MOBO NOGO

My laptop is back in Kentucky with the GEEK.  The motherboard decided not to wake up last Friday.  I heard that the new mobo is ordered and enroute.  Maybe I'll get back online again soon and can stay with it.  Thanks for the patience.   ~CMQ

I got to play with one of the new "weatherproof/ waterproof" digital cameras recently.  This was a Fujifilm model, a small compact form factor with sealed controls and lens.  It's submersible to 10ft or so.  It has a very slow focus mechanism.  It is slow recycling between shots.  It is a short 3X optical zoom which is kinda old school these days.  But- what fun it can be floating in a pool, paddling down a river or snorkeling a shallow reef.  This wouldn't be a first camera for a serious photographer nor would it be a suitable backup.  But as a special use piece you can capture wet snapshots all day long.  What is the alternative?  Wrapping a bread bag around your DSLR and using two twisty ties?  Sony, Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus all have multiple entries in this fairly new market.  If you spend lots of time around the water- this could make for a fun and creative summer.  Oh yeah- this shot has the camera about 10 inches under the surface in the Patapsco River shooting back at my mug.  Mottled Me.
