In Charleston, South Carolina in 1865 Freedmen (freed slaves) celebrated at the Washington Race Course (today the location of Hampton Park). The site had been used as a temporary Confederate prison camp for captured Union soldiers in 1865, as well as a mass grave for Union soldiers who died there. Immediately after the cessation of hostilities, Freedmen exhumed the bodies from the mass grave and reinterred them properly with individual graves. They built a fence around the graveyard with an entry arch and declared it a Union graveyard. On May 1, 1865, a crowd of up to ten thousand, mainly black residents, including 2800 children, proceeded to the location for events that included sermons, singing, and a picnic on the grounds, thereby creating the first Decoration Day.  It was the nation's first Memorial Day.

It's Memorial Day weekend and I'm in Washington D.C. 

Veteran's Day is to honor military veterans.  Memorial Day, formerly known as "Decoration Day", commemorates men and woman that have died while in military service.  As a Navy Vet myself and a FREE United States Citizen... this holiday moves me like no other.  There is a Veteran's Memorial near you somewhere.  Find it, and go visit one afternoon.  Clear your mind of current political debates and economic issues.  Think about the FREE society you live in.  Think about what it has cost us over to years to earn this Freedom.  Never miss an opportunity to thank a Veteran.

There are dozens of streams that trickle out of the ground from the peaks that are Grandfather Mountain.  On the Southeast face springs the beginnings of Wilson Creek.  These headwaters flow crisp and clean into the valley below growing in width and depth as they merge with others.  Eventually it becomes the Wilson Creek and that feeds the gorge of class rapids that get kayaked all Summer long.  It all starts with this little spring. I had a fabulous Saturday exploring these waters and this valley.
