Sweet Dreams Baltimore

At night, the big red "Domino Sugars" sign, literally the size of a basketball court, glows from the refinery rooftop. Like the Orioles and crab cakes, the Domino sign screams Baltimore. It costs $100,000 a year to power and to keep the 1950s-vintage neon tubes in good repair. In this town, rich in the physical remnants of its working past, that's money well spent: a blazing reminder that people and machines still make things.

  1. I've been looking over the harbor for years at this sign. It was about time I captured it on "film"... The compression that blogspot puts on the uploaded image is to make it "fit" into their system. It muffled and blottered the black in the sky a bit. Almost like you can see it posterized or something. The hi-res copies I have aren't like that. Anyway- it was a calm beautiful 60deg. It was quiet and peaceful. I walked all over the Harbor Marina and enjoyed my night immensely.
